thank you for seven amazing years ♥

It is with both sadness and excitement that I officially announce the closing of OrangeBeautiful’s retail shop at 4658 N Damen Avenue in Chicago. The shop has already had its last days of operation, and we will be moving into our new studio space in Portage Park during the month of February.

a little background on the retail shop

When I moved our studio into the shop back in January of 2010, followed by the opening of our retail store just months later, OrangeBeautiful was one of only a couple of retail businesses located in a somewhat underutilized stretch of North Damen Avenue. I was excited to take a leap of faith on a neighborhood that I had lived in for the past 6 years; a neighborhood in which my now-husband and I rented our very first apartment together… and my leap of faith paid off.

Over the course of the next six years, OrangeBeautiful flourished its new tiny corner storefront space: We’ve carried the work of over 100 different local and independent artists, designers and craftspeople. The shop has been rearranged, redecorated and re-merchandised countless times, and we’ve designed, constructed and installed more than 50 window displays (some of which you can check out here), which - we'd like to think - contributed to the beauty, creativity and vibrance of our little Ravenswood neighborhood.

Along with designing numerous wedding invitation suites, party invitations and baby announcements, OrangeBeautiful has proudly worked with neighboring Damen Avenue shops on their branding, vinyl signage, print collateral, business cards, promotional materials, website design, etc.
Amy’s Candy Bar, Brew Camp, The Perfect Cup, Hoard Antiques, TURIN, T.Salon & Gallery, Dolce Casa Café, Alapash and more.

In the summer of 2013, we founded SHOW of HANDS, our very own full-scale craft show showcasing quality design, a high level of curation, and the support & growth of the best vendors in and around Chicagoland. Ultimately, we made the decision to take a break from retail shop hours in order to focus on this new endeavor. After 2 years, and three successful SHOW of HANDS, we reopened the shop in October of 2015.

This past year with the retail shop open has been the best yet. So, why - you may ask - are we closing up now, when things are really just gaining momentum?...   Read on:

The decision to close the shop was not an easy one...

...But it is the right one.  The short, straightforward reason is that the retail shop no longer makes sense in the bigger picture of OrangeBeautiful as a company.

For those of you who have only just recently discovered our shop, this must seem like a sudden, possibly drastic, decision, but I assure you it's neither. Ultimately, everything boils down to the fact that I've spread myself, as a business owner, as a designer, and as a person, way too thin. It's time to step back and decide what aspects of the business work the best and put more focus there...

OrangeBeautiful's product line will continue. We will continue to take on custom design projects, including - but not limited to - branding/logo design, announcements & invitations, business cards, bookbinding, limited edtion printing, etc.  And, of course, SHOW of HANDS will continue... Our 6th show is coming up in just a few months > April 28-30, 2017 at Artifact Events here in Chicago!

it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday
